Horsebox, Trailer and 4x4 Security: What Every Horse Owner Needs to Know
Horse people are a fascinating bunch. (I say this as a horse person myself who somehow landed in the world of vehicle security.)
We’ll happily spend £80 on supplements because Karen from the yard said tumeric and black pepper brough her horse back from the grave.
We’ll buy a £300 turnout rug because the horse “prefers” that particular brand.
We’ll insure our saddles, our horses, our dogs, our cats and probably our left kidney.
Then we’ll leave a £50,000 horsebox or a £15,000 trailer in a field and assume nobody will nick it because it’s got a wheel clamp fitted. (News flash: they will. Imagine 11-year-old me's face when I was excited to take my new Haflinger pony I'd spent 2 hours bathing the evening prior to her first show and was met with an empty space where my trailer used to be. Gutted didn't quite cut it.)
Unfortunately, thieves don’t share our optimism about stuff not getting nicked.
The Equestrian Theft Problem Nobody Wants to Think About
Most horse owners don’t worry about theft until it happens to them. My parents and I definitely didn't think our elderly Rice trailer was a target, until it was gone.
Nothing left but the remains of a wheel clamp that the thieves' angle grinder made short work of, discarded where my trailer used to be.
It’s understandable that vehicle theft is at the back of your mind. You’re busy enough remembering farrier appointments, worming schedules, vaccinations, show entries, lessons and whether you’ve actually turned the electric fence on.
Security tends to sit firmly in the “I’ll sort that later” category.
The problem is that horseboxes, trailers and towing vehicles are incredibly attractive to thieves because... They’re valuable.
They’re often stored in remote, isolated locations where no one will see it being stolen, and they have the added benefit to thieves that they can disappear down the motorway at 60mph. (and the rest)
It’s Not Just The Horsebox and The Trailer...
When most people think about security, they think about slapping a clamp and a hitch lock on the trailer.
But criminals don’t... They’re looking at the whole setup.
The Tow Vehicle. This is the bit many horse owners forget.
Your shiny pickup, Land Rover or 4x4 is often worth considerably more than the trailer it pulls.
Modern vehicles are packed with technology. Heated seats, heated steering wheels, and keyless entry.
Unfortunately, criminals have become rather good at exploiting our tech-savvy cars. When I first stepped into the world of vehicle security, I was BAFFLED when an engineer showed me how cars are stolen. It takes a fancy device that clones the key signal. Then bam. You hop in the car and drive away like it's yours. The whole thing takes less than 10 seconds.
The Horsebox
Whether it’s a compact 3.5 tonne horsebox or a luxury HGV with living accommodation nicer than most city centre flats, it’s a valuable asset.
And valuable assets attract unwanted attention.
“But It’s Got A Factory Tracker. I'm absolutely fine!"
Excellent. That doesn’t mean it’s the same thing as a dedicated, insurance-approved aftermarket security system.
Many factory-fitted tracking systems are designed around convenience features and vehicle management.
Insurance companies know this. That’s one reason many insurers still require an aftermarket tracker for higher-value vehicles. If you happen to own a motorhome, (which often share the same base as most 3.5 tonne horseboxes) you'll know insurance companies won't touch you until you've had a Thatcham-approved tracking system fitted.
If factory systems provided exactly the same level of protection, insurance wouldn’t be asking for these systems. Your insurance company doesn't want your vehicle to be stolen. If it is stolen, they want it recovered quickly. That's not because they really want you to qualify for Horse of the Year Show, it's so they don't have to pay out.
Insurance companies know the recovery rate of vehicles with Thatcham-approved security systems is significantly higher than those without. That's why they insist on them, even if your vehicle comes with a factory-installed tracker.
Why Layers of Security Matter
Good security is a bit like horse management. You don’t rely on a single thing. You don’t vaccinate your horse and decide that’s healthcare covered forever.
You don’t feed one scoop of balancer and assume nutrition is sorted for life.
Vehicle security works the same way.
The best protection usually combines:
● Good storage practices (Behind a locked gate, ideally)
● Physical security (your clamp and hitch lock)
● Immobilisation (prevents the vehicle from being driven without authorisation)
● Tracking technology (Track your asset from your phone and it's monitored by a dedicated UK-based control centre 24/7.)
Each layer makes life harder for the thief.
And criminals prefer the path of least resistance.
The Reality
Most thieves are for the easiest vehicle to steal.
If they can steal the horsebox next door in five minutes but yours takes significantly longer, you’ve already improved your odds dramatically.
No security system can promise you’ll never be targeted. Anyone who claims otherwise is selling fairy tales.
What good security can do is make your vehicle substantially less attractive, 100x harder to steal and significantly easier to recover.
And that’s often enough to make a criminal move on.
You’ve got enough to worry about already.
Entries.
Vet bills.
Wondering which wormer to buy this time of year
Why is the farrier needed again, it can't be six weeks already. I swear I only saw him yesterday
The fact that your horse is apparently terrified of a flowerpot that in his mind wasn’t there yesterday.
Vehicle theft shouldn’t be another thing on the list of crap to worry about.
At Autonox, we help horse owners protect horseboxes, trailers and towing vehicles with practical security solutions designed to make life difficult for thieves.
Some of the solutions we offer:
Trackers:
We offer a range of Thatcham-approved trackers. (What's Thatcham? I wrote all about that in another blog post HERE. But to summarise: Thatcham is an independent body who test security devices for insurance companies to make sure they're as good as the manufacturer claims)
Trackers are fitted to the vehicle and do a lot more than track the vehicle. Some offer driver identification, so if the vehicle moves and it's not you, you'll get a phone call within seconds alerting you to the vehicle's movements. They're monitored by real people in a control centre, 24/7, and you can track the vehicle from your phone. Pretty nifty.
Immobilsers:
What's an immobiliser? An immobiliser is a security device designed to stop a thief from driving your vehicle away. That’s it. Simple. A tracker locates the vehicle. An immobiliser stops it from being driven away in the first place.
Different immobilisers achieve this in different ways, but the end goal is always the same:
The vehicle cannot be driven away without the correct authorisation.
Think of it as an additional layer of security between a thief and your vehicle. Even if they clone the key, they can't drive the vehicle away.
Dash cams and horsebox cameras
There's some fancy kit on the market now. Cameras that offer parking protection if someone dinks your car while you're in the shops, cameras that automatically save video footage if they detect danger worth recording.
We also offer installation of horse box cameras, because let's be honest. Us horse people are thrilled when we can watch our horses munching haynets in the back of a trailer or on the lorry.
If you're considering insuring your car, truck, trailer or horsebox, we'd be more than happy to help. You can give us a bell on 0800 820 3679 between 7:30am and 10:30pm or you can learn more about our equestrian and rural solutions HERE
